Discovering Neverthorn: A Spellbinding Journey

It’s not often that a book pulls me in as quickly as Neverthorn did. The cover caught my eye, but it was the mention of magic academies that had me hooked right away. Authored by the talented M.J. McGrath, this tale entwined with fantasy and intrigue proved to be an unexpected adventure, filled with quirky characters and a world that felt both familiar and refreshingly unique.

As I delved deeper into the narrative, I couldn’t help but smirk when I encountered a certain Liam O’Connor. If I had a nickel for every time I read about a character with that name, I’d have… well, two nickels. Thankfully, McGrath’s O’Connor has a character all his own, distinct enough to exist comfortably alongside the other universe’s version. This playful cross-dimensional feel gave me giggles, and I couldn’t shake off the thought: O’Connor multiverse confirmed!

The initial chapters transported me back to my favorite Elder Scrolls games, particularly with the glossary at the beginning, echoing familiar terms like Dwimmer and Daygon. This blend of high-fantasy flair and rich world-building was impressive, although unsettlingly reminiscent of the Harry Potter series at first glance. While I understand that magical academies do not belong solely to J.K. Rowling, the comparisons were unavoidable and jarring. Nevertheless, if you’re seeking something reminiscent of Harry Potter without directly wandering into its territory, Neverthorn is precisely what you need.

However, the book took a moment to find its footing with me. Harlow, the protagonist and a rather eventful 29-year-old, sometimes felt like she was caught in a time warp, often acting younger than her years suggested. The absence of swearing gave it a YA vibe, and for a while, I contemplated that Harlow could very well have been 19 without altering the crux of her story. The dynamics of her age compared to her peers felt slightly off, which occasionally made it hard to fully resonate with her character.

The romance, particularly with Typhon, lacked the spark I hoped for, which was disappointing. Yet, Liam stirred my interest, though I wished he could have been more present in the plot. The fleeting glimpses of their interactions left me hungering for more, convinced that he deserves a fuller exploration in the sequel.

What truly captivated me was the world and magic that McGrath meticulously crafted. Harlow’s fierce protectiveness over her adoptive sister and new friends added depth, while the mystery surrounding the wraith kept me eagerly turning pages. Nocta also piqued my curiosity; could he truly lead Harlow onto a path of darkness? I found myself yearning for further revelations about his character, and I secretly hope he turns the tables on our expectations.

As I reached the final pages, I felt a twinge of frustration—Neverthorn leaves you on a cliffhanger that jangles the nerves, but not in an unpleasant way. Although I’m eagerly counting down the days until the next installment arrives in July, I’m thankful for the thoughtful world McGrath has introduced me to.

In conclusion, if you’re a fan of magical realms, rich character dynamics, and thrilling cliffhangers, Neverthorn will undoubtedly beckon to your bookshelf. It may have its quirks, but isn’t that part of the charm? The reading experience was one that tickled my imagination, and I can’t wait to see where Harlow’s journey leads next. Whether you’re a seasoned fantasy enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, there’s something in Neverthorn that promises to enchant and inspire.
