An Engaging Exploration of Enigma by Runyx

When I first heard about Enigma by Runyx, I felt a thrill of anticipation. After immersing myself in her DarkVerse series, which I consider a masterpiece (well, maybe excluding that last book!), I couldn’t wait to see how she would navigate the realm of dark academia. It’s a genre I’m passionate about, and I had high hopes that Runyx would deliver a haunting tale packed with emotional depth. However, upon finishing the book, I found myself vacillating between intrigue and disconnection.

At 3.75 stars, I didn’t dislike Enigma—in fact, I had fun at times. The characters, Salem and Caz, carried a promise of greatness. Salem, our brooding, death-obsessed protagonist, is layered with complexities that draw you in, yet I found myself wanting more emotional connection. Caz, the artistic soul serving as her muse, intrigued me with his creative struggles, but without that swoon-worthy spark, he felt less memorable than I had wished. The chemistry between them was meant to be fiery, but instead, it fell flat.

Runyx’s writing, a warm hug of poetic prose, still shines like a beacon. Her ability to infuse emotion into beautiful, lingering sentences makes the reading experience enjoyable. The chapter intro quotes were a delightful touch, each one tantalizing enough to add new titles to my TBR pile. That respect for literature was palpable and added depth, perfectly aligning with the book’s dark, atmospheric tone.

However, where Enigma struggled for me was in its pacing and execution of plot twists. The buildup was engrossing; the dark secrets and whispers about shadowy organizations had me hooked. Yet, the last few chapters devolved into an overwhelming info dump, which diluted the suspense. I couldn’t help but feel that all those threads woven throughout the novel unraveled too hastily, leaving me disoriented.

One of the bright spots in the narrative was Salem’s character growth and her evolving relationships. Her journey from a lonely, misunderstood girl to someone who forms genuine connections was beautifully depicted. And then there was Baron Nathaniel Whitmore, the character who stole the show for me! His mix of charm and mystery left me craving more. I genuinely hope he gets his own story soon; his complexity could drive an entire plot.

Reflecting on the romance aspect, though, I craved more intimacy and development. Despite initial sparks, the connection between Salem and Caz never reached the compelling heights I had expected. The smut, typically a highlight in Runyx’s work, felt awkward and underwhelming. The pencil scene? Let’s just say it didn’t hit the mark for this fan!

Overall, Enigma is charged with potential, from its atmospheric writing to well-developed characters, yet it stumbled in delivering an emotional and cohesive experience. While I can’t say it left me breathless, I still hold out hope for Runyx as she journeys further into dark academia—she clearly has the skill and creativity.

This book might resonate well with readers who appreciate complex characters and elegant prose but don’t mind a plot that doesn’t completely stick the landing. I intend to revisit Enigma and explore the physical copy—who knows? Maybe the tangible experience will rekindle the connection I yearned for in my first read. If you’re a delightful mess of emotion like me, maybe joining me for a third chance with it might also be worthwhile!
