Anathema (The Eating Woods, #1) – A Journey into Darkness and Desire
From the moment I stumbled upon Anathema by Keri Lake, I felt an undeniable pull—an intoxicating blend of gothic ambiance, curses, and a romance simmering with tension. The promise of a cursed assassin entangled with a reckless witch? I was already seated, popcorn in hand. As I dove into the eerie depths of this gothic tale, I found a world that tugged at my heartstrings and kept me turning the pages long into the night.
As we enter the dark world of Anathema, we’re introduced to a curse as ancient as the very woods that trap our characters. Zevander Rydainn, a brooding 211-year-old assassin, harbors secrets darker than the forested shadows he dwells in. Then there’s Maevyth, a heroine with fire in her veins and a reckless spirit that challenges fate itself. Their initial connection stings with tension—like ivy wrapping around a gravestone, their fates intertwine in ways they never anticipated. I found myself intrigued by the delicate balance between their stark worlds, wondering if love could really conquer such darkness.
The pacing had its ebbs and flows. The first part, Shadows & Sorrows, took its time dawning upon the desolate landscape of grief and power struggles, and frankly, I found myself wishing for a bit more velocity. But when we reached Blades & Shades, everything shifted; the stakes rose, and the chemistry between Zev and Maevyth took center stage. “Goodnight, Lunamiszka,” he quips—a delicious blend of annoyance and affection. This delightful banter had me grinning, pulling me deeper into their magnetic connection. There’s something quite fabulous about a slow burn, and the push and pull between them did not disappoint, igniting a thrilling chemistry strong enough to set the pages ablaze.
Yet, as the story progressed into The Fall & The Fury, I found that the anticipated twist limped into view rather than taking me by surprise. Even so, the emotional weight of their conversations elevated the narrative; when Zev confesses, “You consume me entirely, little moon witch,” my heart did a little dance. It’s moments like these, when characters are laid bare, that reminded me why I love slow-burn romances—they have the power to consume you whole.
What really stood out for me were the vibrant characters. Zev, the morally gray hero, became my new obsession. His brooding nature was equal parts infuriating and intoxicating. And then there was Maevyth—a tempestuous firebrand whose bravery was both reckless and inspiring. Their chemistry crackled, giving life to the tortured love story unfolding within the haunted trees of Witch Knell.
And we cannot forget Rykaia, Zev’s sibling, who is every bit the scene-stealer. Her charisma brought light amidst shadows, and her bond with Zev resonated deeply with me. I loved the sibling dynamics, showcasing strength, loyalty, and a sprinkling of teasy banter—exactly the heartwarming contrast needed in a dark tale.
In summary, Anathema is a beautifully crafted literary experience, shrouded in mystery and laced with gripping tension. While the opening may have felt sluggish at times, the captivating dialogue, rich character development, and haunting atmosphere ultimately made this a memorable read. If you revel in gothic tales rich in banter, romance, and a touch of dark magic, then this one should be at the top of your TBR. My buddy read with Katerina amplified the experience, as we squealed, laughed, and screamed over cliffhangers like the true book nerds we are.
Overall, I impart a solid 3.5/5 stars—a lyrical tale of fate and fire that left me yearning for just a bit more impact. Now I’m left with that tantalizing itch for the next installment; will the romance blaze or smolder in the next chapter? Only time will tell!
