You’ve heard the term content creation and content marketing. But what is it and why is it? The what of it all is exactly what it sounds like. You create content, blogs or otherwise, and put it out into the world to be consumed. But why? As you know already, email lists are king in the book world. But how do you grow your list? You create content as mentioned before, share it in your newsletter and then ask them to share it.
As discussed earlier, marketing is made of two pieces. Connecting with people and being relentlessly helpful (Tim Grahl). One of the ways authors can be relentlessly helpful is by blogging/content creation. And most people will either tell you, blogging is the only way to find your audience or blogging is dead and no one reads blogs anymore. Guess what. Both are right (although Seth Goins thinks blogs are making a comeback or never left). Blogs are harder to grow today then they were a few years ago but if you enjoy blogging, then you should start one because it is a great way to connect with people. And if you don’t start a blog, you’ll need to start creating something else.
Alternatives to starting your own blog include vlogging on YouTube or wherever video is consumed, podcasting or guest posting/being a guest on podcasts.
The reason you need to do something is simple. You can’t find an audience if you’re just sitting at your desk typing your next book where no one can find you. However, maintaining a blog can be hard. So here’s what where you should begin, if you decide blogging/vlogging is right for you, (Podcasting is slightly more involved so we'll chat about that later)
Another thing you can do which definitely falls under the “Relentlessly Helpful” umbrella is interviewing authors and doing book reviews. We all know how hard it is it get our books in front of the right readers and the more authors who are building their platforms and then sharing other books and authors with those fans, the easier it is for everyone. It helps readers find their next book and helps authors find their true fans. Everyone wins.
