In one of my writing groups, there was a new author who was working with a cover designer for the first time and she was disappointed in the mock ups the designer had provided. Come to find out, she had told the designer the genre and title and I assume a bit about the book but gave them no specifics as to what she was looking for. Somewhere along the line, another author author told her not to. As someone who appreciates art and artistic freedom, I understand the mentality, however, designers are not mind readers. So here are some things you can do to make sure your designer maintains artistic freedom while creating designs you will love!
Cover designers are artists but they are also professionals and this is a business relationship. Never forget that.
