Review of Rose of Jericho by Patrick Grecian: A Journey Through Death and Purpose

From the moment I stumbled upon Rose of Jericho by Patrick Grecian, I sensed it was a book that would linger in my thoughts long after the last page. The themes of death, loss, and the complexity of human emotion called out to me, and I was eager to dive deep into this exploration of mortality. A heartfelt thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for providing the advanced listening copy, and my local library for the physical version that enhanced my reading experience!

Upon finishing, I initially rated the book a solid 3.5 stars. However, as I reflected on the meaningful conversations embedded within its pages, I found myself compelled to give it a well-deserved bump up to four stars. Grecian’s narrative is undeniably skillful, weaving complex themes that demand contemplation. Yes, there were sections that felt stretched—moments where I found myself waiting for the plot to inch forward. But once it hit its stride, the narrative’s depth and nuance truly captivated me.

One of the first things that caught my attention was the continuation of the same narrator from Grecian’s previous work, Red Rabbit. While the narration effectively suited the book’s tone, I wouldn’t describe it as riveting. The multitude of character perspectives made following the audiobook somewhat challenging, which is why I wholeheartedly recommend experiencing this story with a physical copy in hand. There’s something special about immersing yourself in the text, making the experience richer—akin to savoring wine and cheese together.

At its core, Rose of Jericho grapples with profound questions surrounding death. What does it mean when death, both as an idea and a being, is defied? This existential inquiry runs deep through the lives of the characters, each molded by their own grief and loss. The book opens with Moses, a man drowning in sadness after losing his family. In a desperate act that defies nature, he kills death itself, catapulting us into a complex web of repercussions that redefine existence.

Moses is a character that truly fascinates me. His purpose, vividly alive even in death, grounds him unlike others. His journey, filled with deeply human moments, showcases how the understanding of one’s purpose can be a sanctuary amid chaos. In contrast, we meet Frank—an entertainingly flawed figure with a vibe reminiscent of a used car salesman. His relentless schemes make him a character full of both frustration and humor, embodying humanity’s often ridiculous attempts to cheat death.

Then there’s Lucy, a whirlwind of desperation driven by love for her community. Where Moses seeks to find meaning, Lucy struggles to reclaim what’s already lost, and her journey takes unexpected turns that keep us on our toes.

The novel unfolds like a well-formed Dungeons & Dragons campaign, orchestrated by an unseen hand, leading us on a journey full of twists and turns. Despite moments of unease—like the brutal portrayal of witch trials and unsettling events—there’s a poetic quality in how Grecian paints the atmosphere. The exploration of death is beautifully melancholic, forcing us to confront its duality: both heartbreaking and necessary.

Ultimately, Rose of Jericho is a contemplative examination of how we face death. It’s for readers who appreciate philosophical depth beneath a gothic façade. If you’re open to a story that forces you to rethink your understanding of mortality and purpose—paired with engaging characters and vivid imagery—then this book is certainly worth your time. While some may struggle with its darkness or its supernatural elements, I found it a profoundly moving experience that continues to echo in my thoughts.

So, who might enjoy this book? If you’re drawn to stories infused with existential musings, powerful character arcs, and a touch of haunting darkness, let Rose of Jericho transport you into its richly woven narrative. Trust me, it’ll be a ride worth taking.
