Review of Mistress of Bones by K.D. Eason

There’s something about the allure of a new fantasy world, especially one cloaked in the shadows of gods and the mysteries of bone. K.D. Eason’s Mistress of Bones piqued my interest not just for its stunning cover—which, let’s be honest, led me to expect a swoon-worthy romantasy—but also for its promise of a richly woven tapestry of intrigue and character-driven plots. And while this book certainly turned out to be something different than I anticipated, it left me deeply engrossed in its intricate world.

At its heart, Mistress of Bones follows the journey of Azul, our complex protagonist, slinging her way through political machinations and ethereal mysteries. The book is a masterclass in multi-point-of-view storytelling, introducing us to a myriad of characters whose individual arcs collide and intertwine with Azul’s in ways that are both unexpected and enlightening. From the enigmatic Nereida to the elusive Faceless Witch, each character is rendered vividly, adding layers to the narrative that pulse with life.

One of the standout features of Eason’s writing is the creative worldbuilding; I found myself completely immersed in a fantasy realm literally built upon the bones of ancient deities. The religion threaded through the narrative and the thematic elements surrounding concepts of Death, Life, and Dreams were riveting. Eason does a remarkable job of establishing a cultural backdrop that feels alive and unique, reminiscent of the swashbuckling eras filled with adventure and danger.

However, I must acknowledge that while the adventure is captivating, the pacing can feel a bit crammed at times. The brisk transitions from one character’s plot line to another can be disorienting, and the constant shifts in perspective left little room for emotional depth. I found myself yearning for a closer connection to the characters, especially when tragic moments unfolded. The stakes felt high, but I often struggled to feel them alongside Azul and her companions.

The romantic arcs, too, while present, take a backseat—something I surprisingly appreciated. In a landscape often dominated by romantic subplots that overshadow the main story, how refreshing it is to read about characters who prioritize their duties and ambitions. Yet, I couldn’t help but feel that the potential for emotional resonance was muted. Azul’s stubborn, sometimes reckless behavior occasionally had me rolling my eyes, but her pursuit of her goals also made her relatable as a young adult navigating a tumultuous world.

Despite its flaws, I believe Mistress of Bones deserves more than its current average rating. For readers who crave engaging, plot-driven YA fantasy that prioritizes unique worldbuilding over central romances, this book is a hidden gem. I would recommend it to those intrigued by braiding plotlines, intricate character motivations, and a sprinkling of political intrigue.

Ultimately, Mistress of Bones left a mark for its bold narrative choices and its refreshingly unconventional approach to fantasy storytelling, proving that sometimes, the unusual path can lead to the most rewarding encounters. So if you’re ready to explore a landscape filled with gods, secrets, and the fierce determination of flawed characters, give it a try—the adventure awaits!
